In our previous post detailing Mileage Plan sweet spots, we listed several of the top-value redemptions possible with Alaska miles. Let's choose four of these sweet spots and compare the typical cash price with the cost to purchase the necessary miles under the terms of the best offer.

When domestic airlines levy a Federal Excise Tax on mileage purchases, it's with the assumption that the purchased miles will be used for domestic air travel. However, as many award travelers are probably aware, this often isn't the case. If you use those purchased miles for international travel, hotel stays, gift cards, or any other redemption, you should be able to get it refunded.

Quite a nice promo and the price for the miles is interesting. The only issue is the redemption which will not be imminent and so there is some risk to buy miles in advance for a future redemption.Especially because something can change in Mileage Plan after Alaska will join Oneworld.

I will hold off on this as too pricey. We have no travel plans for the foreseeable future. My feeling is better deals will be coming our way when the airlines start to attempt to ramp up their operations.

I agree. I think that the airlines will run more saver awards in the near future to entice people to fly again. Fares would also be cheaper until people start to feel comfortable flying again so buying the miles might not be the cheapest option.

The only downsides to the program are the lack of bank point transfer partners, the inability to combine awards operated by multiple partner airlines and some shockingly expensive awards on both Alaska and partner airlines. But, for travelers who know how to earn and burn them, Alaska Mileage Plan miles can be incredibly valuable.

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan has one week to go for their latest promotion on the purchase of miles. There are many great uses of the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan. Ultimately crunch the numbers before making a purchase. You can use them on oneworld member airlines, as well as other carriers such as LATAM, Singapore Airlines, Air Tahiti Nui and others.

This promotion yields a decent per mile price of 1.85 US cents when buying exactly 160,000 miles for US$2,956.25 (AU$4,150). You can easily get far more value than that when redeeming for Business and First Class flights.

American Airlines announced late last year that their AAdvantage program will shift how customers earn miles from distance flown to a mix of ticket price and elite status. For consistency, Mileage Plan will adjust member earn on American marketed flights, and members will now earn miles on American Airlines flights based on a combination of a percentage of distance flown and fare class.

Alaska Miles can be purchased at a rate of 2.75 cents per mile, plus a 7.5% Federal Excise Tax. This means that if you buy 1,000 miles, it will cost you $27.50 plus approximately $2.06 in taxes.Do note that if you're a Canadian resident, you will be charged GST/HST and QST for Quebec residents. If you're short a few miles and you need to top off your account, it can be a good idea to buy Alaska Miles. Buying a small amount of miles will generally be the more favorable option since the cost to buy Alaska miles can be pricey. How Many Alaska Miles Can You Buy?Alaska Miles can be purchased in 1,000-mile increments and you purchase up to 100,000 Alaska Miles in a single transaction. You can buy or receive as a gift up to a total of 150,000 Alaska Miles per calendar year. Multiple times per year, Alaska will have their Alaska Mystery Bonus promotion. This bonus allows you to obtain bonus miles based on how many you purchase in a single transaction. The discount you receive and the amount of points you must buy to receive the maximum discount will vary. You'll need to log into your account on the Alaska Buy Points page during a promotional period to see your discount.Your discount will usually be shown in a banner image (for example "Surprise! Get up to 50% bonus miles"). Under that you'll see how many miles you'll have to purchase to receive the discount. You'll typically need to buy at least a handful of points to qualify for any discount during the promotion. For example here's the purchase requirements for a past Alaska Mystery Bonus that I received:Buy 3,000 - 9,000 miles and get 30% moreBuy 10,000 - 19,000 miles and get 40% moreBuy 20,000 - 100,000 miles and get 50% moreAs an additional note, don't feel pressured to buy additional miles just because they are on sale. If you only need 1,000 miles, then it is best to only buy 1,000 miles. These sales come around often, so you'll have plenty of chances to add additional miles to your account for any upcoming travel you may have.Cost Per Mile For Alaska Buy Points PromotionsBonus %Cost Per Mile60% Bonus1.71 Cents50% Bonus1.83 Cents40% Bonus1.96 Cents30% Bonus2.11 Cents20% Bonus2.29 Cents10% Bonus2.5 CentsStandard Rate2.75 CentsYou can squeeze some great value out of Alaska Mileage Plan miles, especially when redeeming them towards award flights on partner airlines like Singapore Airlines and Emirates. If you have a great redemption lined up, buying points to top off your account during a promotional period can easily be worth the money.

You can earn miles by booking your next car rental through Alaska Airlines Cars. This service, powered by CarTrawler, will search through major brands to find the best rental price. When booking through select Mileage Plan partner suppliers, you can earn miles to boost your account. You can even filter the results to find hybrid vehicles. Depending on the supplier, you might pay in advance or at the counter when you pick up your car, but most suppliers offer free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance, just in case things change.

Sounds confusing, we know, but stay with us. Say you want to fly from Boston to Beijing this summer in business class on a direct, nonstop flight on Hainan Airlines (one of 11 Skytrax five-star airlines and the only one in mainland China). At time of publishing, the cheapest round-trip ticket in business class anytime between May and August prices out to $3,909 per passenger on Google Flights.

The American Airlines miles sales are processed by American Airlines itself, so you can get category bonuses on cards that bonus airline or travel purchases like the American Express Platinum which offers 5x on purchases from airlines, get travel statement credits if you charge the miles to a premium card like the Sapphire Reserve or Citi Prestige, or you can use your Arrival Plus to get American Airlines miles for zero cash.

Both of Alaska's options to purchase miles only make good economic sense if you are redeeming miles for an upgrade or award flight where the cash value of each mile required for the award is worth more than the price you pay to buy the miles. And it never makes sense to share miles with another person. Read on to find out why.

We think the Alaska Fly & Buy Miles program is pretty nifty. While most other airlines charge over three cents for each mile you purchase, with Fly & Buy you can purchase up to 10,000 additional Mileage Plan miles for 2.15 cents per mile (2 cents per mile plus a 7.5% excise tax). This feature is only offered during the initial purchase of a paid ticket at alaskaair.com.

Given the popularity of Alaska Airlines, their miles are valued at profitable rates. MilesBuyer offers competitive prices for your unused Alaska Airlines miles. We also offer higher rates for accounts containing bulk miles especially in multiples of 50K, 70K, 100K, 140K, 210K, and so on.

After a debacle years ago increasing award pricing without notice for travel on Emirates, Alaska Airlines made an express commitment to notify members in advance when making changes to the program. Sadly they did not do that this week, as Monday they increased the price of award travel on their oneworld partner Japan Airlines, and they did this without any advance notice. So members who were saving their miles for a specific trip had the rug pulled out from under them.

@ CL You still can, but at a price. This week I happened to be searching ORD-YVR awards for later this year. The ask for an F roundtrip on Alaska metal, via SEA or PDX, goes up to 190,000 miles.per seat.
